Architectural and Historical Significance of Christ Church

Christ Church was built in 1843 of native granite in the Gothic style by its first rector, the Rev. Robert Bolton. Bolton was born in England and eventually settled in Pelham, where he saw need for an Episcopal Church in our community. The church is the first house of worship in Pelham. Rev. Bolton's sons, William Jay and John, were artists Who contributed to the architecture and artistry of the church. William Jay was a premier stained glass artisan and created many of the stained and painted glass windows in the church, including The Adoration of the Magi - believed to be the first figural stained glass window made in America.

The Bolton family moved from Pelham long ago, but their legacy remains. Their manor home, known as the Bolton Priory, sits nearby on Priory Lane.

The gardens tucked behind the church are flanked by gorgeous stained glass windows providing a lovely and historic backdrop for the Pelham Preservation & Garden Society 2024 event.
