Applications are reviewed by the NY State Historic Preservation Office to determine if the house meets eligibility for listing on the National or State Register of Historic Places.  To determine such eligibility, complete the following steps:

STEP 1:  Assess your house for changes that you are aware of since it was constructed:

Does the house have replacement windows?  Yes: __  No: __Has the siding on the house been changed?   Yes: __  No: __Does the house have a newer asphalt roof?   Yes: __  No: __

Has there been an extension to the house that changed its original exterior?  Yes: __  No:  __

(If you have answered yes to more than one of the above questions, the house may not pass eligibility with the State Historic Preservation Office.)

STEP 2:  Describe any other changes to the house (interior or exterior) that you are aware of:

STEP 3:  Describe any original architectural features or details (interior or exterior) of the house that you think are important (e.g., original exterior features such as slate or tile roof, ornamentation or interior features such as woodwork or original Butler’s Pantry, Baths or Kitchens):

STEP 4: The next step is to gather additional information from your Village’s Building Department (Village of Pelham at 195 Sparks Avenue or Village of Pelham Manor at 4 Penfield Place).  Ask to see the file that is kept on your home and look for the following in your file:

1.  Original Building Permit from when the house was built.  (For very old homes built before 1900, there may be no permit on file.)  From the original building permit, write down the following information: Year of permit: __________________________ Name & address of architect: ______________________________________________________ Name of original owner:  _________________________________________________________ Exterior material of home:  _______________________________________________________ Roof material of home: __________________________________________________________  2.  Original plans of home.  (Most homes will not have plans on file.) Name & address of architect and/or name of original owner (if not on permit): ______________________________________________________________________________  Has the house been changed in appearance from the original plans and, if so, how? ______________________________________________________________________________  3.  Subsequent Building Permits or plans for any renovations or additions to the house.  Indicate the type of renovation, the year of the renovation, the name & address of the architect and the name & address of the owner: ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ 

STEP 5:  Take at least two exterior photos of the exterior of your home (front & back) as well as any others to show original interior or exterior details that you think are important and include them with this application.

STEP 6:  Indicate any other known historical information about your house, such as the names of any significant individuals who previously owned the house:

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and applicants will be contacted by email after review by the NY State Historic Preservation Office.  The review can take 30-90 days.
