Benedict Fountain Restoration

The Pelham Preservation Society raised the funds and oversaw the restoration of the Benedict Fountain and adjoining stairs that lead from Pelhamwood Avenue, across from the Pelham Train Station, to Benedict Place.  The fountain -- components of which date from the original development of Pelhamwood at the turn of the century – were taken down and re-cast to recreate the fountain in its original appearance. Aldo DiVitto, architect and Pelham Preservation Board member, oversaw the restoration project for the organization. Working with old photographs and vintage postcards showing the fountain area, the fountain was restored as close to the original as possible. Pelham Preservation called upon local and regional experts to complete the Benedict Fountain restoration. The stone walls were re-pointed by Victor Spaccarelli Construction Co. Inc. of Marlboro, NY. The installation of the custom stone work of the fountain was installed by JAJ General contracting of Yonkers; Towne House Restorations (THR) located in Brooklyn, NY, custom fabricated the fountain utilizing the original pieces to make a mold and sculpting the piece from there to resemble the original.  In 2014, the final phase of the project was completed with new landscaping and water flowing in the fountain for the first time in almost a century.

Work began on the fountain in October 2007, starting with re-pointing of the stone wall and steps up to Benedict Place.
